PSRM, PCRM accuse Maia Sandu of treason and call for resignation

The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), the largest opposition party in parliament, is calling for President Maia Sandu's resignation. This comes after she stated in an interview that she would vote for unification with Romania if a referendum were held. The Party of Communists (PCRM) also labelled her statements as "an act of treason" and is demanding her resignation and departure from the country.
In their issued statement, the PSRM (Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova) claims that Maia Sandu's presidency poses "a threat" to the nation. They describe her statements as "an open act of treason directed against Moldovan statehood, the Constitution, the sovereignty, and neutrality of the country."
The PSRM further argues, "Maia Sandu has publicly admitted that she does not consider the Republic of Moldova a value worth preserving and that she is prepared to advocate for its destruction. This constitutes a direct betrayal of national interests, committed consciously, publicly, and on a foreign platform." This criticism pertains to an interview Sandu gave to British journalists Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell.
The Socialists accuse Sandu of exploiting her role as head of state to promote a unionist agenda that they believe undermines the foundations of Moldovan statehood. In light of this, they demand that she "resign immediately!"
Additionally, the party calls upon the Prosecutor General's Office, the Intelligence and Security Service, and other relevant bodies to initiate an investigation into "possible treason," stressing that the president's public calls to dismantle the country warrant a thorough legal and political review.
The Socialists appeal to "all patriotic forces" to set aside their differences and unite "against Maia Sandu's regime."
The Communist Party of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM), another opposition party, has also characterised President Sandu's remarks as part of a long-standing agenda promoted by pro-Romanian forces that are now being put into action.
They assert that "Maia Sandu's willingness to vote for the country's loss of independence and her support for so-called European integration without Transnistrian region represent a serious and cynical violation of the Constitution and the laws of the state."
The PCRM has demanded that Maia Sandu "immediately resign her mandate and leave the territory of the country she despises and intends to erase from the political map of the world."

In an interview with British journalists, Maia Sandu, the President of the Republic of Moldova, emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin aims to exert control over Europe. She highlighted the challenges Moldova faces in combating Russian propaganda and interference in its democratic processes.
Sandu pointed out that, given the current geopolitical situation, it is increasingly difficult for Moldova to survive as a democracy and a sovereign state. She expressed her personal support for unification with Romania, should a referendum be organized on this issue. However, as the head of state, she must consider the realities in Moldova.
“As President of the Republic of Moldova, I recognize that there is no majority in favor of unification with Romania. However, the majority supports accession to the EU, and we are working towards that goal. This is a much more realistic objective and helps us safeguard our sovereignty,” declared Maia Sandu.
