Three doctors may face jail in connection with Comrat deaths

Three doctors from the Gagauzia Autonomous Region are facing up to three years in prison for alleged malpractice that resulted in the death of two patients. The Prosecutor General's Office has announced that it has submitted two criminal cases to court against these doctors, who are accused of failing to adhere to medical rules and procedures.

The first case was reported in October 2022. A patient who had suffered a severe leg injury and was infected with a serious disease was brought to the Comrat District Hospital. According to the investigation, the doctors conducted only a superficial examination, made an incorrect diagnosis, and failed to perform mandatory tests.

The patient was not hospitalized and did not receive the necessary preventive treatment for the infection. As his condition deteriorated, he was not provided with timely emergency care, which ultimately led to his death.

“According to the forensic report, a causal link was established between the doctors’ inaction and the patient’s death, indicating that appropriate and timely medical assistance could have prevented this tragedy,” stated the prosecutors.

The second case occurred a year ago when a patient sustained multiple fractures of the ribs and pelvic bones in a road accident. Despite the severity of his injuries, the doctors failed to monitor the patient's vital signs and did not admit him to the intensive care unit.

Due to the lack of proper medical supervision, the patient's condition worsened, and he died shortly thereafter.

In this case as well, an expert examination determined that the death was caused by the doctors' negligence and their failure to fulfil their professional obligations.

If found guilty, the doctors could face up to three years in prison and may also be banned from practising medicine or holding certain positions for up to five years.
