Chisinau allocates €255,000 to save the historic 184-year-old Triumphal Arch

Moldovan authorities have announced an extensive restoration project for the Triumphal Arch in central Chisinau, allocating €255,000 (approx. 5 million MDL) to repair the structural damage accumulated over decades.

The 13-meter monument, a symbol of national identity, has not seen major rehabilitation in nearly 60 years.

A battle against erosion

The landmark, also known as the "Holy Gates," is currently suffering from visible degradation. Experts warn that previous repair attempts in the 1960s caused long-term harm by using non-porous cement at the base of the pillars.

"This cement essentially waterproofed the structure, preventing the internal stone blocks from 'breathing,'" explained architectural historian Sergius Ciocanu. This moisture trap has led to significant crumbling of the original masonry, threatening the monument's stability.

Political and social backing

The restoration funding was secured through a national budget amendment. Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban confirmed the city’s readiness to assist, noting that the Arch is the centerpiece of the capital's architectural ensemble, which includes the Nativity Cathedral and the Great National Assembly Square.

For Chisinau residents, the project is a matter of civic pride. "It is the most visited tourist spot in the city," one local noted. "It feels shameful to see a building with such history in this condition."

A legacy in stone

Built in 1841 by architect Luca Zauskevici, the Arch was inspired by the triumphal structures of Rome. Beyond its historical significance, the upper level houses the city’s most famous mechanical clock, which remains a focal point for national celebrations.

The upcoming works aim to reverse the chemical erosion of the stone and restore the monument to its original prestige, ensuring it remains safe for the thousands of tourists and locals who gather beneath its shadows annually.
