Polish scholarships and education: New horizons for Soroca youth
Dozens of young people in Soroca, Moldova, are reconnecting with their ancestral heritage through free Polish language courses organized by the Polish Union. These classes serve as a vital link to their family history while offering concrete professional advantages.
The project, funded by Poland, provides students with all necessary materials and modern facilities. Beyond the classroom, participants engage in educational activities, including a seven-day summer camp in Soroca that blends language study with traditional songs and dances.
According to Rodica Mlenițcaia, President of the Polish Union in Soroca, the initiative is about more than just grammar. It allows youth to capitalize on their cultural identity while accessing financial incentives through specialized scholarship programs.
A gateway to European universities
For many high school graduates of Polish descent, these courses are a stepping stone to higher education in Poland. Students like Nichita Pavlenco, currently studying in Krakow, benefit from tuition-free programs and monthly stipends provided to those with documented Polish roots.
Even for those staying in Moldova, the scholarships provide essential support. One student noted that the financial aid is being used to purchase personal laptops, which are crucial for completing school projects and digital learning.
Preserving traditions for future generations
The initiative has also seen active participation from parents who attend lessons alongside their children. They view the program as a way to ensure that Polish values and traditions are not lost to time.
"Our grandparents and great-grandparents had Polish roots," one parent shared. "These lessons help us remember where we come from while learning a beautiful culture in a friendly environment."
Currently, approximately 75 families in the Soroca district benefit from the diverse educational and cultural activities organized by the Polish Union.
