Moldova boosts electronics exports with new €5m British investment

British manufacturer Cornelius Electronics is investing €5 million (approx. 98.5 million MDL) to expand its production capacity in northern Moldova. The project focuses on the Edineț Industrial Park and aims to strengthen the country's position within European electronics value chains.

The investment involves the construction of three new production halls covering over 3,000 square meters. These facilities will manufacture specialized wiring and connection systems for 14 global industries, including medical technology, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy.
Strategic focus on EU exports
The electronics sector is a cornerstone of Moldova’s economy. According to the Moldovan Investment Agency and UN Comtrade data, the country exported $3.37 billion worth of electrical components to the EU between 2019 and 2024, accounting for 90% of the sector's total exports.
Cornelius Electronics currently employs 81 people in Moldova, over 80% of whom are women. The company’s entire output is dedicated to industrial clients within the European Union, focusing on high-quality engineering and innovation.
Institutional support for regional growth
The expansion was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding between the Investment Agency, the Innovate Moldova Program, and the Edineț City Hall. This agreement facilitates infrastructure adjustments within the industrial park to accommodate the new facilities.
"Cornelius Electronics exemplifies how international expertise integrates into our local industrial ecosystem," stated Natalia Bejan, Director of the Investment Agency. She noted that the company’s ability to attract more clients after several years in Moldova made this expansion possible.
Strengthening UK-Moldova economic ties
This project aligns with the deepening economic relationship between the UK and Moldova, governed by the Strategic Partnership, Trade, and Cooperation Agreement signed in 2020.
British Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Moldova has grown significantly, rising from $78.8 million in 2009 to over $257 million in 2024. Currently, 235 companies with British capital operate in the country, primarily in high-value sectors such as IT and electronics.
Through this expansion, Cornelius Electronics aims to bring further British capital and technology to the region, supporting professional training and integrating Moldova more deeply into regional supply chains.
