Pope Leo XIV urges peace as US-mediated talks progress in Abu Dhabi

Pope Leo XIV appealed for an immediate end to the conflict in Ukraine during his Sunday address from the Apostolic Palace. The Pontiff warned that ongoing Russian strikes are leaving civilians dangerously vulnerable to the harsh winter freeze.
Speaking to the faithful on January 25, the Pope emphasized that prolonged hostilities only serve to deepen the divide between nations. He noted that the continued violence is pushing the possibility of a "just and lasting peace" further out of reach.
Humanitarian concerns and moral appeal
"Ukraine is under constant attack, leaving entire populations exposed to the winter cold," the Pope stated. He expressed his profound sadness regarding the escalating impact on civilian lives, urging the international community to intensify efforts to halt the war.
The Sovereign Pontiff also addressed a group of young activists from Catholic Action in Rome. He praised their commitment to non-violence, encouraging them to be "peacebuilders" in their schools and communities. He reminded them that evil is only defeated by good.
Diplomatic context in Abu Dhabi
The Pope's appeal coincides with significant diplomatic movements in the Middle East. Trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States took place in Abu Dhabi over the past two days.
Following a closed-door session on Saturday, January 24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the discussions as "constructive." A subsequent meeting is expected to take place as early as next week.
Future rounds of negotiations
U.S. officials have confirmed that a new round of mediated talks is scheduled for next Sunday, February 1, also in Abu Dhabi. While no formal agreement has been reached to end the war, mediators report "tangible progress" in the dialogue.
Pope Leo XIV concluded his message by calling for prayers for peace in Ukraine and the Middle East. He stressed that true peace can only be built on "respect for all peoples" and the rejection of interests that ignore the common good.
