President Trump reports significant progress in Abu Dhabi peace negotiations

President Donald Trump announced significant progress in negotiations to end the conflict in Ukraine, disclosing a temporary "energy ceasefire" following a personal appeal to Vladimir Putin.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, the U.S. President confirmed that Moscow has agreed to halt strikes on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure for at least one week. The move comes as the region faces record-breaking sub-zero temperatures.
Diplomatic intervention amid extreme cold
"I personally asked President Putin to stop the attacks for a week because of the extreme cold," Trump stated. He noted that the Russian leader agreed to the request, a gesture the White House "greatly appreciates" given the humanitarian risk.
The moratorium officially began on the night of January 29, 2026. It is expected to be reciprocal, with Ukraine reportedly agreeing to suspend drone strikes against Russian territory for the same duration.
Abu Dhabi talks reach critical phase
The next round of negotiations is scheduled for February 1 in Abu Dhabi. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that these discussions may shift toward a bilateral format between Ukraine and Russia to finalize remaining terms.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed the existence of the energy pause. He emphasized that protecting the power grid is essential for survival as temperatures are forecasted to drop further in the coming days.
