Lukashenko rejects Moscow's statements about a potential invasion of Ukraine in the Transnistrian region: "I don't believe in it"

The President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, said on Saturday that he does not believe that Ukraine will worsen the situation in the Transnistrian region, as the Russian Ministry of Defense said on Friday, the Russian Interfax agency reports.

"I don't believe in that. It is not profitable for them," he said on Saturday, answering questions from journalists. "The West would like to solve the problem with Russia and Transnistria to close this "grey hole", as they say, and unite Moldova, push it into Romania or make it pro-Western. This is their goal. Ukrainians do not need this. I don't think the Ukrainians will go crazy and start some kind of second front," Lukashenko emphasized. On February 23, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed in a statement that Ukraine had stepped up preparations for the invasion of the Transnistrian region. On Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned the United States, NATO countries and Ukrainian authorities against further adventurous steps, especially regarding the Transnistrian region. Meanwhile, the authorities of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova rejected the statements of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation regarding the alleged challenges that Ukraine would prepare on the border with the Republic of Moldova, on the Transnistrian segment. Chisinau gave assurances that the situation at the border is unchanged and urged people to remain calm.
