EU amends its sanctions regime, after Chisinau and Bucharest requested the sanctioning of the oligarchs accused of destabilizing the Republic of Moldova

The European Union will amend and expand its sanctions regime, so that people who incite the violation of the democratic order and who use illicit resources for destabilization attempts will be included in the sanctions lists of the EU bloc. The statement was made by MEP Siegfried Mureșan during an interview for Radio Moldova. According to the official, the EU is considering these measures at the request of the Foreign Ministers from Chisinau and Bucharest, in the context in which this phenomenon exists.

"The EU sanctions regime must be expanded and adapted to the new dangers. This was the joint proposal of the ministers in the government of the Republic of Moldova and Romania. The reaction of the European Commission of the European External Action Service and the ministers of the other member states was to design this process. The EU modifies its sanctions regime, expands it, so that in the future oligarchs who use illegally money to destabilize the Republic of Moldova will be covered by a sanctions regime, their assets, accounts will be blocked, they will no longer be able to use their assets, the financial resources, in particular, to cause trouble", said MEP Siegfried Mureșan. We remind you that at the beginning of this week, Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu, in Brussels, asked the European Union to impose sanctions against Moldovan oligarchs accused of helping Moscow to destabilize the country in an effort to overthrow the pro-Western government in Chisinau. Earlier, during a press briefing, the president of the country, Maia Sandu, said that the state institutions confirmed the information presented by Volodimir Zelenski, regarding the plans of the Russian Federation to destabilize the Republic of Moldova, as well as the change of power from Chisinau.
