State Road Administration mobilizes massive response as icy conditions grip Moldova

Moldovan authorities remain on high alert as severe black ice and freezing rain continue to disrupt traffic across the national road network.

The State Road Administration (SRA) reported an intensive overnight operation starting Wednesday evening. Between 19:00 on February 5 and 07:00 this morning, emergency teams battled deteriorating conditions caused by plunging temperatures and mixed precipitation.

The SRA operational service managed 154 emergency alerts, including 68 calls via the 112 emergency line. Specialized crews intervened to tow stranded heavy-duty trucks and successfully cleared a path for an ambulance crew to reach a patient.

Resources deployed on the ground

A total of 141 specialized vehicles and 123 road workers have been deployed across the North, Central, and South regions. Crews have already applied over 2,000 tons of anti-skid material to keep primary arteries functional under winter conditions.

The National Inspectorate of Public Security (INSP) confirmed that the most critical areas include the Ialoveni, Straseni, and Edinet districts. Police units remain stationed on-site to manage traffic flow and assist motorists in difficulty.

In the capital city, Chisinau municipal services are working in continuous shifts. Efforts are prioritized toward main boulevards, access routes to hospitals and kindergartens, and public transport hubs.

Public safety measures

Local authorities have established sand distribution points for residents and continue to supply suburban areas with de-icing materials. Meanwhile, Chisinau schools have transitioned to remote learning to ensure student safety.

The National Meteorological Service has extended the Yellow Code warning for black ice and slippery roads until Friday, February 6, at 20:00. Drivers are urged to equip vehicles for winter and avoid non-essential travel.
