Energocom meets historic gas demand as winter temperatures plummet

Natural gas consumption on Moldova’s Right Bank reached a historic peak in January, driven by an extended cold snap that pushed daily demand over 17,000 MWh. The Ministry of Energy attributed this surge to significantly lower temperatures compared to previous months.
According to official data, Energocom and other suppliers delivered approximately 194.4 million cubic meters of gas to consumers during the first month of the year. This represents an increase of nearly 50 million cubic meters compared to both December 2025 and January of last year.
Impact of freezing temperatures
The primary driver for the increased demand was the severe weather, with average temperatures in January dropping to -5°C, down from -0.6°C in December 2025. This sharp decline forced a rapid scaling of supply to maintain grid stability.
State-owned supplier Energocom provided the lion's share of the volume, delivering over 179 million cubic meters in January. This is a substantial rise from the 135.3 million cubic meters supplied by the company in December 2025.
Institutional market roles
Since September 2025, Energocom has assumed full responsibility for natural gas supply, including billing for both residential and non-residential customers at regulated tariffs.
While Energocom manages the supply and financial logistics, distribution system operators continue to handle technical activities, such as meter readings and data collection.
