Antidepressant availability rises; authorities call it a “moderate trend”, experts warn of risks

The import and consumption of antidepressant drugs have been rising in the Republic of Moldova. In the past year, nearly 1.3 million boxes were sold in pharmacies across the country, representing a 17 percent increase compared to 2022, according to data from the Medicines Agency.

Representatives from the institution assert that the recent trends are not a significant or unusual deviation but rather a moderate shift, especially as more Moldovans are experiencing psychological disorders. Depression and anxiety continue to be among the most prevalent diagnoses.

According to Constantin Nedelea, the deputy director of the Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices, 1.79 million boxes of antidepressants were imported in 2024, while in 2025, the number decreased to 1.26 million. He noted, “Based on the statistical data, there is a 17 percent increase.”

When asked if this trend should be a cause for concern, the official responded, “We probably have no reason to worry. We cannot provide an explanation for the variations we are observing.”

Antidepressants are prescription medications that can only be obtained with a doctor's approval. They are primarily used to treat major depression, but they may also be prescribed for certain cases of chronic pain or insomnia.

Experts emphasize that these medications should be taken strictly according to a doctor's instructions. Improper use or sudden discontinuation of treatment can lead to adverse effects and potentially cause addiction.

Statistical data indicate that the number of people diagnosed with psychological disorders is rising, which partly accounts for the increased demand for these treatments.
