Former Boldurești mayor Nicanor Ciochină will remain in detention for 20 more days

The former mayor of Boldurești, Nisporeni district, Nicanor Ciochină, will remain in preventive detention for another 20 days. This decision was made on February 17 at the request of the prosecutors.

“The preventive arrest has been extended by 20 days at the request of prosecutors from the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS) for the defendant being investigated for torture, inhumane and degrading treatment,” informed the PCCOCS.

Nicanor Ciochină was detained on January 29 while leaving a court hearing related to the case in which he is accused of causing the fatal injury of a 14-year-old teenager on February 19, 2024.

According to the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Causes (PCCOCS), Ciochină allegedly verbally and physically assaulted a man from Boldurești in 2020 when he served as mayor. The assault was reportedly prompted by his suspicion that the man had set fire to dry vegetation in the area.

Ciochină denies the allegations and claims that the case is "fabricated."

Prosecutors are seeking a nine-year prison sentence for Nicanor Ciochină in connection with the teenager's death and three years for his accomplice, Ion Andronache, who is accused of helping Ciochină erase the evidence of the accident.

Ciochină faces charges of failure to notify authorities or provide assistance to the victim after leaving the scene of the accident, and misleading law enforcement agencies.
