Snowstorms paralyze Moldovan roads: Rescuers free ambulances and trapped motorists

Moldovan emergency teams responded to 85 crisis calls in the last 24 hours following heavy snowfall on February 18. The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) deployed massive resources to counter severe traffic disruptions across the country.

Rescue teams performed 42 operations to tow vehicles stranded in snowdrifts. Heavy interventions were concentrated in the southern and central districts, including Cahul, Soroca, Orhei, and the Gagauzia administrative region (UTA Găgăuzia).

Specialized units also prioritized clearing paths for ambulances. In districts like Hâncești and Taraclia, rescuers ensured that medical crews could reach patients despite impassable roads, securing safe transport for those in urgent need.

Emergency extraction in Anenii Noi

The hazardous conditions led to a serious collision between a car and a minibus near Todirești, Anenii Noi. The impact left one female passenger trapped within the wreckage of the car.

Emergency crews utilized specialized cutting equipment to extract the victim. She was immediately handed over to medical personnel and transported to a hospital for treatment. Local authorities are currently investigating the specific cause of the crash.

Total force deployment

A total of 335 IGSU personnel were active in the field during this 24-hour period. The operation utilized 88 specialized emergency vehicles to manage the aftermath of the blizzard and prevent further incidents.
