Ministerial mandate over political ambition: Dan Perciun to prioritize educational reforms

Education and Research Minister Dan Perciun has categorically dismissed rumors regarding a potential candidacy for the Chisinau Mayoralty under the PAS banner.
Speaking during a podcast on Friday, February 27, Perciun emphasized his commitment to finalizing ongoing structural reforms. He stated that his priority remains the modernization of the national education system rather than entering the local political race.
"I will not be a candidate, nor do I wish to be," Perciun clarified. He highlighted key projects, including the rehabilitation of school infrastructure and the introduction of new curricula based on Estonian models, which are expected to reach schools by 2027.
Regarding the PAS strategy for the 2027 local elections, the Minister noted that the party is currently evaluating several high-profile candidates. The selection process targets individuals with clear pro-European visions and demonstrated professional results.
Perciun described the Chisinau electorate as "discerning and informed," requiring a candidate with a robust administrative program. He confirmed that PAS is considering both party members and external professionals to provide a "strong offer" for the capital's residents.
The political landscape in Chisinau remains competitive following the 2023 elections, where incumbent Ion Ceban secured a second mandate with over 50% of the vote. The governing party's previous candidate, Lilian Carp, finished second with approximately 28%.
The 2027 elections are expected to be a pivotal moment for Moldova, potentially taking place under a new administrative-territorial structure currently being finalized by the government to increase local efficiency.
