A total of 279 athletes showcased their speed and endurance at the Winter Edition of the Moldovan National Swimming Championships. Held over three days at the Chisinau Arena’s Olympic-size pool, the competition featured three age categories: Juniors, Youth (U18), and Seniors.

The senior events delivered the highest intensity of the meet. Tiraspol-born athlete Egor Covaliov secured his status as the favorite by winning the 100m freestyle.

Record-breaking performances

Covaliov clocked 51.43 seconds to defeat rivals Dumitru Culiomza and Valeriu Vdovin. While satisfied with the victory, he noted that his time remains adrift of the 2019 national record set by Alexei Sancov.

"I am pleased with the result, but I need to improve my times," Covaliov stated. "The competition was fierce, especially in the short-distance sprints where my opponents were very strong."

New national benchmarks

In the women’s division, Chisinau’s Anastasia Basisto dominated the field. She secured first place in the 50m breaststroke before setting a new national record in the 50m butterfly with a time of 28.75 seconds.

"By Saturday, physical exhaustion set in, which is natural for any athlete," Basisto remarked. "I didn't expect to set a new record in a stroke that isn't my primary focus, but it is a rewarding achievement."

Infrastructure driving growth

Sergiu Postică, President of the Independent Water Sports Federation, noted a significant rise in competitive standards compared to previous years. He credited the modern facilities for this upward trend.

"The level of competition has increased, more records are falling, and participation is up," Postică emphasized. "We take great pride in this Olympic pool; it has encouraged significantly more children to take up the sport."

The championship was organized by the Independent Water Sports Federation of Moldova, with the strategic support of the Ministry of Education and Research.
