Chișinău and Tel Aviv Foreign Ministers discuss situation of Moldovan citizens in Israel

On Monday, March 9, Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi, who is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, spoke by phone with his Israeli counterpart, Gideon Sa'ar. They discussed the situation of Moldovan citizens in Israel amid growing security risks in the Middle East, particularly rising military tensions in the region.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi has prioritized the safety of Moldovan citizens in Israel and reiterated the commitment of the authorities in Chișinău to ensure their well-being.
In this context, Minister Sa'ar emphasized that Israeli institutions are providing all necessary assistance to the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Tel Aviv.
The officials discussed recent developments in the region and their implications for political and economic stability both regionally and globally, highlighting the importance of maintaining international efforts to reduce tensions in the Persian Gulf area.
It is noted that Israel has partially resumed air travel for the repatriation of its citizens, and in the near future, flights for foreign citizens may also be permitted.
According to data from the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Tel Aviv, approximately 15,000 Moldovan citizens are currently in Israel, with most employed across various sectors, particularly construction.
The return to the Republic of Moldova is feasible, given the evolving security situation, either by commercial flights when Ben Gurion Airport is operational or by land via Egypt or Jordan.
The Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in Tel Aviv provides ongoing consular assistance and monitors developments on the ground. Additionally, Israeli authorities have decided to automatically extend the validity of certain visas for foreign workers until March 21, 2026.
