Minister of Environment: Restrictions remain after the Nistru oil spill

Authorities are currently enforcing restrictions on water consumption in the northern region of the country due to oil products that have spilled into the Nistru River. Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder informed Teleradio-Moldova that the results of laboratory tests conducted on water samples will be announced on Friday afternoon, March 13.

All recommendations issued by the Ministry of Environment, starting from Thursday, remain in effect. It is crucial to follow official communications to stay informed about the situation regarding the Nistru. In the northern region, the minister advises avoiding using water directly from the Nistru for both human and animal consumption.

The alert about pollution of the Nistru River was raised on March 10, following the detection of oil stains near the localities of Naslavcea and Otaci in the Ocnita district. This led to the temporary suspension of water supply in several areas.

Preliminary reports indicate that approximately 1.5 tons of petroleum products may have leaked into the Nistru as a result of a Russian drone attack on the Novodnestrovsk hydroelectric power plant. Health officials have warned about the potential risks this pollution poses to public health.

Although authorities have implemented measures to contain the pollution, oil from Ukraine continues to flow into the Nistru.

During a field visit on Thursday, Minister of Environment Gheorghe Hajder stated that the situation in the Naslavcea area has worsened compared to earlier assessments. Authorities recommend that the public consume bottled water and stay up to date on official announcements.
