Authorities report that petroleum products originating from Ukraine have been spilling into the Nistru since March 10.
It is estimated that the substance will reach Soroca this evening.
On Friday afternoon, a second protective dam was installed near the town of Cureșnița, Soroca district, to contain the petroleum. The operation was carried out with the support of rescuers from the General Inspectorate for Emergencies in Romania and specialists from Apele Române.
On March 13, authorities raised the alert level for pollution in the Nistru after laboratory tests in the Naslavcea region showed elevated contamination levels. They warned that temporary restrictions on water supply to localities in the north of the country may be necessary.
