Two former governors of the region - Dmitri Croitor (1999-2002) and Mihail Formuzal (2006-2015) - have previously announced their intention to run for the post of Bashkan, local media reported.

At the moment, Croitor holds the post of Moldovan ambassador to Turkey.

Under the legislation, after the registration of initiative groups, they would collect up to 9 thousand signatures in support of the Bashkan candidate from at least 9 localities in the autonomy. If the signatures are validated, the person can be registered as a candidate.

Present regional leader Irina Vlah has held the position for two consecutive terms and cannot stand in the new elections.
