EU Justice Commissioner pays official visit to Moldova
The European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, is visiting the Republic of Moldova on 1 and 2 March to discuss "issues related to the rule of law in the context of our country's status as a candidate for accession to the European Union", according to the European Commission.
The EU official will meet President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Dorin Recean and Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.
"Commissioner Reynders is to meet with President Maia Sandu to discuss the preservation of democracy, the rule of law and justice reforms in the Republic of Moldova. Commissioner Reynders will also meet with Prime Minister Dorin Recean to discuss strengthening the rule of law and further justice reforms in Moldova and will meet with Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru to discuss justice reforms, including the implementation of the Venice Commission recommendations, and Moldova's efforts to improve judicial cooperation and training," the European Commission said in a statement.
Commissioner Didier Reynders will also meet the head of the Moldovan Parliament's Legal Committee on Appointments and Immunities, Olesea Stamate, as well as representatives of civil society organisations (Institute for European Policies and Reforms and the Moldovan Legal Resource Centre).
According to the Ministry of Justice, Didier Reyndes and Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru will hold a press briefing on Thursday 2 March.
On 23 June 2022, the European Council granted the Republic of Moldova the status of candidate country for EU membership.
