Germany backs Moldova’s EU bid with €12.9 million development grant

The Moldovan Parliament’s foreign policy committee has approved negotiations for €12.9 million (approx. 250.9 million MDL) grant from Germany. The funding is earmarked for four priority projects designed to accelerate the country's alignment with European Union standards.

The primary objective of the financial package is to strengthen public institutions at both central and local levels. German support will focus on enhancing the capacity of local administrations to implement effective policies and modernise public services.

Support for SMEs and education

A significant portion of the grant will target economic competitiveness. The funds will assist small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in expanding their export potential to the European market.

Additionally, the investment will bolster Moldova’s dual vocational education system. This programme aims to equip young people with technical skills that are currently in high demand within the domestic and regional labour markets.

Infrastructure and local development

The agreement also prioritises the modernisation of local infrastructure to meet EU criteria. According to the parliamentary statement, improved cooperation between authorities will be a key factor in driving local economic growth and regional stability.

The German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) will coordinate the implementation of these projects. This new funding phase builds upon a strategic development cooperation agreement signed between the two governments in 2014.

Government officials emphasised that the grant represents a vital opportunity to accelerate internal reforms and provide visible benefits for Moldovan citizens through better infrastructure and employment prospects.
