Fraudsters impersonate Moldova tax officials to extract fines

The State Tax Service (SFS) has issued an urgent warning to taxpayers regarding a fraudulent scheme spreading via messaging apps such as Viber and Telegram.
Scammers impersonating tax officials are sending false notifications claiming citizens have been fined 20,000 MDL (approx. €1,025). These messages often cite vague legal provisions to intimidate recipients.
The fraudulent alerts instruct citizens to report to unofficial addresses and threaten them with imminent court summons. The SFS confirmed that these messages are fake and represent a criminal misuse of the agency's official identity.
Authorities have urged the public to ignore these messages and report them immediately to law enforcement. Taxpayers should verify any financial information exclusively through the official SFS website or authorized communication channels.
