One click can save lives: how the 112MD app works

Residents of the Republic of Moldova can now request emergency assistance more quickly with the new 112MD mobile application, which was launched today. This free, user-friendly app provides immediate access to emergency services, enabling faster response times and enhancing public safety. You can download it directly from mobile app stores.

When the application is launched, users enter their basic information, including their phone number, first name, and last name. In case of an emergency, they simply press a red button. The application then presents two options based on the situation. If immediate assistance is required, the user's location is automatically sent to emergency services, and a phone call is initiated instantly. If the user is unable to speak, they can communicate through text messages.

The application is designed to be user-friendly, particularly for individuals with visual or hearing impairments, with an interface tailored to their needs.

According to Constantin Gorincioi, deputy director of the 112 Service, "First of all, it allows individuals who cannot communicate in Romanian or have communication difficulties to start a text-based conversation. Additionally, it transmits pre-filled information from the user's profile, which helps to reduce response times. It is essential to report only relevant and urgent cases."

The application is designed to function both domestically and internationally, as it is available in six countries: the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Finland, and Germany.

"This application was developed in collaboration with colleagues from the Republic of Moldova, with support from UNDP Moldova and the Challenge Fund. It is intended to help teams operate more quickly and efficiently," says project manager Filip Malenak.

Additional features of the application include the ability to share your location with family, receive national alerts, and find nearby police stations or hospitals.

"112MD is not just a piece of technology; it is a life-saving tool and a trusted partner for every family. Through this application, every call that is transmitted accurately and swiftly can turn a critical situation into a moment of safety," emphasizes the Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniella Misail-Nichitin.

The application is fully functional and integrated into the emergency services' automated information system. It can be downloaded for free on all devices. This project was developed with financial support from the Czech Republic and the United Nations Development Program, with a budget of 50,000 euros.
