Each ambulance intervention costs 1,885 lei from insured funds

On average, each ambulance call costs Moldovans 1,885 lei. These expenses are covered by mandatory health insurance, for which taxpayers pay either 9% of their salary or a fixed amount of 12,636 lei per year.

The National Health Insurance Company has reported that over the past year, the ambulance service was requested 781,000 times. Nearly one in three of these calls involved major emergencies where the patient's life was at risk.

To fund pre-hospital emergency medical care services, approximately 1.5 billion lei was allocated from mandatory health insurance funds last year, which is about 199 million lei more than in 2024.

We remind you that in one out of seven cases, the emergency medical team was called for individuals without mandatory health insurance.

In the Republic of Moldova, employees are automatically covered by health insurance, which is funded through contributions deducted from their salaries and other earnings. Self-employed individuals, patent holders, business owners, farmers, and others are required to insure themselves by paying a fixed annual contribution of 12,636 lei.

For the first three months of the year, until the end of March, owners of agricultural land and individuals engaged in independent retail trade receive an 80% discount, lowering their health insurance premium to 2,527 lei.

After April 1, they must pay the full premium, and penalties will be added for each day of late payment.

The 2026 budget for mandatory health insurance funds includes expenditures exceeding 19 billion lei. For pre-hospital emergency medical services, more than 2 billion lei is earmarked, which is nearly 476 million lei higher than the approved amount for 2025.
