Moldova digitalizes power grid with EU and UNDP backing

Moldova has installed 44,520 smart meters, reaching nearly half of its 2027 target to modernize the national energy system. The initiative aims to enhance transparency and efficiency in a sector undergoing rapid transformation.

The Ministry of Energy confirmed the progress on Friday, noting that the deployment is essential for infrastructure security. The project is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Italian Government.

"This result marks a significant step in modernizing Moldova's energy grid," the Ministry said in an official statement.

Beyond hardware, the partnership focuses on cybersecurity and energy independence. With Italian support, Moldova is establishing its first Cybersecurity Operations Centre for the energy sector. This follows 2025 security audits of state-owned companies, which were funded by Denmark.

The reform also promotes "energy communities"—local cooperatives designed to reduce costs. In 2025, four such communities were created in Chisinau and rural areas with help from Sweden and Norway. Authorities plan to launch at least three more in the coming months.

Officials emphasize that the new meters will lead to more accurate billing and better consumption management for households. The rollout continues across northern and southern distribution zones, with the 100,000-meter milestone expected by late 2027.
