"Breaking the silence": Moldova’s first teen drama takes on the reality of school bullying

Moldova’s Ministry of Education and UNICEF have launched the country’s first socio-educational series, "Generation Alpha," aimed at addressing bullying and discrimination. The production premiered on April 3 in Chisinau and is set to air on the national public broadcaster.

The series follows Patricia, a student struggling to integrate into a new school environment. In a meta-narrative twist, the lead actress, Patricia Ciorescu, shared that she drew from her own recent experiences with school exclusion to bring authenticity to the role.

Real stories on screen

Director and screenwriter Ilinca Stînca noted that while the series is fictional, the scripts are "copy-paste" reflections of real-life testimonies. Many students interviewed during development admitted to feeling helpless and unable to discuss these issues with their parents.

Producer Sergiu Ciorescu emphasized that the project aims to create a "friendly environment" in society. The production was a joint effort between a local studio, UNICEF, and the Ministry of Education and Research to provide concrete solutions for educators and families.

A strategic social intervention

The initiative comes at a critical time for the Moldovan education system. According to the latest Education Barometer, one in four adolescents in the country has experienced social exclusion or direct aggression at least once.

"This series teaches children how to manage their emotions and recognize the feelings of others," stated Dan Perciun, the Minister of Education and Research. He praised the project for promoting positive behavioral models and providing support mechanisms for those in need.
