Romania seeks to replicate Moldova E-Gov success

Romania has expressed interest in adopting Moldova's EVO digital identity wallet as a model for its own digital transformation, according to Moldova's E-Governance Agency (AGE).

A Romanian delegation of senior officials from the interior ministry, the Special Telecommunications Service, and digital governance bodies visited Chisinau from 1 to 3 April. The visit was hosted by AGE.
The delegation focused on EVO, Moldova's national digital identity wallet, as well as on MConnect, the country's government interoperability platform, and eGov4Dev, its unified digital design system. AGE described these as tools aligned with EU digital governance standards.
"We continue to strengthen our partnership with Romania and share the experience gained through government digital platforms, while also learning from our partners' best practices," AGE Director Nicoleta Colomeет said.
Romania's state secretary for digitalisation, Mădălina Marcu, said the Moldovan team's citizen-centred approach had made an impression. "The experience shared here shows us how to build digital services from the ground up without losing sight of people," she said, according to the agency's statement.
During the first day of the visit, the Romanian delegation attended the launch event for EVO's latest integration, which was also attended by more than 150 representatives from Moldova's public and private sectors.
Discussions also covered coordination on the EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet), a European Commission initiative to provide all EU citizens and residents with a secure digital identity by 2026. Moldova, which received EU candidate status in 2022, has aligned its digital infrastructure with EU standards as part of its accession process.
Romania's Minister of Economy, Digitalisation, Entrepreneurship and Tourism, Irineu Darău, had previously held talks with AGE in Chisinau on deepening bilateral cooperation in this area, according to the agency.
AGE said both countries plan to develop pilot projects and interoperable mechanisms between their digital ecosystems. EVO and other Moldovan digital tools are set to be showcased at Moldova Digital Summit 2026.
