Ex-Boldurești mayor appeals 7-year sentence for fatal teen crash

Nicanor Ciochină, the former mayor of Boldurești in Nisporeni district, was sentenced to seven years in prison by the first instance court for fatally injuring a 14-year-old teenager. He has appealed the sentence to the Centru Court of Appeal.
The first hearing in the court occurred on Tuesday, April 7. However, it was interrupted until the positions of three lawyers representing Ciochină and his accomplice could be presented. This information was provided by the Chisinau District Prosecutor's Office, which is handling the case brought to court by the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Causes (PCCOCS).
According to the prosecutors, Nicanor Ciochină is represented in court by four lawyers.
During the session, the court addressed the lawyers' request to cancel or replace the preventive arrest with a more lenient measure. The Centru Court of Appeal declared this request inadmissible and ordered that the preventive arrest of the convicts be maintained.
We remind you that the accident in question happened in February 2024, when Mihăiță, a 14-year-old teenager from Boldurești, was fatally struck by a car. The driver was Nicanor Ciochină, who fled the scene of the accident and attempted to deceive law enforcement by changing the car's license plate with the help of an accomplice.
In February 2026, the Chisinau Court in Buiucani sentenced Nicanor Ciochină to seven years in prison for the accident that resulted in the death of the minor and for leaving the scene of the crime.
In connection with this case, Ion Andronache, who was accused of assisting Ciochină in hiding the evidence of the crime, received a two-year prison sentence to be served in a semi-closed facility.
Prosecutors argued in court that the defendant had attempted to conceal the evidence of the impact, including by staging another collision, and they requested a harsher sentence.
Ciochină and his accomplice have not pleaded guilty. Their lawyers have appealed the sentence and are seeking an acquittal at the Court of Appeal.
