Maia Sandu on the Easter of the Dead: Let’s remember those who shaped our path

On Easter of the Dead, President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu sent messages to citizens, highlighting the importance of returning to what truly matters: roots, family, and intergenerational connections.
"On Easter of the Dead, we take the time to return to what truly matters: our roots, our families, and the invisible link that connects generations. Let us reflect on those who have given meaning to our journey and who remain a part of us through everything they left behind. In the moments we share with our loved ones, filled with peace and gratitude, let us find the reconciliation we need and the strength to move forward," the head of state said.
According to Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, today is a day for reflection and peace: "During these days, on the Easter of the Dead, we pause to remember those who are no longer with us but live on in our memories and hearts. Honoring the departed demonstrates our care for those we hold dear. May this day bring you peace, reconciliation, and the strength to move forward with dignity and hope."
On Sunday or Monday, April 20, Orthodox Christians visit cemeteries to honor their loved ones who have passed away. The cult of the dead, which symbolizes the communion between the living and the deceased, holds a special significance for the Orthodox Church. From a symbolic perspective, the Easter of the Dead connects the earth with heaven and links the past, present, and future, according to the priests.
Traditionally, the Easter of the Dead is celebrated one week after the Resurrection of the Lord. During this time, believers remember their deceased relatives and friends, visit cemeteries, light candles, and give alms to maintain a symbolic connection with the departed. It is believed that these gestures help the souls of the deceased.
Additionally, the Chisinau City Hall is providing free transportation on April 19 and 20 to facilitate travel to the "Saint Lazarus" Cemetery and other cemeteries in the capital and suburbs.
The buses will operate on a special schedule and will be increased as needed to accommodate the significant rise in passenger numbers during this period. Some traditional routes will be extended to ensure access to the cemeteries, and special trips will be organized to the "Sfântul Lazar" Cemetery, marked with signs "C," "D," and route number 27.
