Coalition crisis: Romania’s Social Democrats weigh withdrawal of support for PM Bolojan

Romania’s Social Democratic Party (PSD) convened on Monday, April 20, at the Palace of Parliament for a pivotal internal vote titled the "Moment of Truth." The party’s leadership is seeking a formal mandate from approximately 5,000 members regarding their continued support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and the current governing coalition.
The internal ballot follows a model previously used to justify the formation of the broad coalition comprising the National Liberals (PNL), the Hungarian Democratic Union (UDMR), USR, and national minorities. The central question directly asks members whether the party should withdraw its political backing from the Prime Minister.
Presidential warnings of instability
President Nicușor Dan addressed the escalating tension, warning that Romania may enter a period of "political turbulence." Despite the friction, the Head of State emphasized that a firm consensus remains among the four pro-Western parties regarding the country’s strategic economic trajectory.
The President confirmed that all parties remain committed to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Maintaining the current budget and financial stability is viewed as a non-negotiable priority by the administration in Bucharest.
Mediation and continuity
"We will likely face political friction, but there is a clear consensus on the PNRR among the four pro-Western parties and the minorities," President Dan stated. He further noted that the authorities are focused on securing all available European funds before the upcoming deadlines.
While the President avoided taking a definitive stance on PM Bolojan’s future, he reaffirmed his role as a mediator. He signaled that multiple rounds of consultations may follow to preserve a stable, pro-Western government.
Reflecting on the necessity of the current alliance, the President clarified his stance on the coalition's future. He stressed that all political actors must make every effort to ensure the parties continue to govern together for the sake of national stability.
