Awareness campaigns boost blood donor turnout

Recent information campaigns have significantly increased the number of blood donors in the Republic of Moldova. By raising awareness among the population, particularly through social media, more individuals are being encouraged to voluntarily participate in donation events, according to representatives of the National Blood Transfusion Center.
In recent years, large-scale campaigns and awareness initiatives have significantly increased public proximity to donation points across the country. As a result of frequent awareness-raising on social media, the number of donors has risen, with many people responding positively to calls for action, according to Silvia Roșca, the head of the institution, during the show " Dimineata cu Radio Moldova."
However, the summer months pose a significant challenge for blood collection. In July and August, the number of donors tends to decrease due to vacations and holidays. In response, the National Blood Transfusion Center intensifies public outreach and organizes additional activities to replenish blood reserves.
Individuals eligible to donate blood must be between 18 and 65 years old, weigh at least 50 kilograms, and be in good health. Donations can typically be made once every two months, while plasma donations can be made as frequently as once every two weeks.
While a current reserve of blood products is always maintained, it must be replenished daily to meet hospital demand. Silvia Roșca emphasized that "a reserve of blood components always exists, and it is constantly renewed to account for expiration dates. Most often, our institution operates with a current reserve, which must be updated daily, as blood products can only be sourced from individuals willing to donate."
Doctors note that blood donation also benefits the donor's body, promoting red blood cell regeneration, improving microcirculation, and increasing overall resistance. The most significant benefit, however, is the ability to save lives, as a single donation can provide components that help up to three different patients.
Authorities are urging eligible citizens to visit collection points and to make blood donation a regular act of solidarity.
