New rail infrastructure to bypass Ukraine transit routes
The Cahul-Giurgiulești railway section successfully passed a critical structural integrity test today following a four-year operational hiatus.

The strategic segment, severely damaged by landslides in 2022, has been fully rehabilitated. An official reopening is scheduled for May 7.
Strategic regional impact
The state enterprise Calea Ferată din Moldova (CFM) identifies the Valeni section as a vital corridor. Its restoration allows freight trains to reach the Giurgiulești International Free Port directly.
Until now, grain shipments were forced to bypass the area through Ukraine. This detour resulted in significant additional costs and heightened logistical risks for exporters.
Engineering and financial outlook
The government-funded project involved reconstructing 400 meters of track. Engineers installed 920 reinforced piles and poured 8,000 tons of concrete to stabilize the embankment.
The upgrade included a complete overhaul of the superstructure, featuring new ballast, sleepers, and rails. These interventions ensure long-term safety and high-load capacity.
CFM administration estimates that the reopened route will generate approximately €357,000 in immediate operational revenue.
