Largest energy storage system launched in Rădeni

The largest electricity storage system in the Republic of Moldova, with a total capacity of 60 MWh, integrated with a 50 MW photovoltaic park, was launched on April 30 in the Rădeni locality of the Strașeni district.

This investment is crucial for the country’s new energy structure. By storing excess energy and delivering it during peak periods, the project optimizes consumption, stabilizes the grid, and enhances the efficiency of green energy sources.
"Cooperation between private investors, state-owned enterprises, and the government is essential for transforming the energy sector. This storage system clearly demonstrates the group of investors' commitment to collaboration. I congratulate them for completing this project in a short time—it sets an example for the entire local renewable energy market," said the Minister of Energy, Dorin Junghietu, during the inauguration ceremony of this facility.
The Minister also highlighted the direct benefits for consumers, noting that such investments contribute to more competitive electricity prices.
The storage system enables efficient use of energy generated by the photovoltaic park.
"Currently, we have a 50 MW photovoltaic park, with 24 MW in the free market and 26 MW participating in the fixed-price mechanism. The reference price for energy sales is determined by OPCOM for the next day. During daytime periods of high production and low or even negative prices, we store the energy produced and sell it in the evening when demand and prices are higher," explained Vitalie Zveaghințev, one of the investors.
Market estimates indicate that in the coming months, storage systems with a total capacity of approximately 200 MWh will be operational, significantly accelerating the integration of renewable energy and increasing the flexibility of the national energy system.
The group of investors also plans to expand its energy portfolio by launching a 10 MW natural gas-fired power plant by the fall of this year, with plans for a wind farm set for development by 2027.
