New penitentiary in Chisinau: What stage the project has reached

The project to construct a new penitentiary, which is set to replace Penitentiary No. 13 in Chisinau, was relaunched. This decision follows the termination of the contract with the external contractor, who failed to adhere to the terms of the contract. This information was provided by the Minister of Justice, Vladislav Cojuhari.

"Upon taking office, my first request was to conduct an audit of the implementation unit. As a result, I terminated the contract with the external implementer who failed to meet the deadline," stated the minister.

He explained that the project has since been clarified and adjusted and is currently in the process of finalizing the technical documentation.

"Today, we are finalizing the specifications and updating the documentation in order to advance in the public procurement procedures," Cojuhari said.

The construction of the new penitentiary, which is to be located near Bubuieci, remains a strategic project for the authorities, although the completion deadline has been postponed several times.

This project aims to build a modern prison with a capacity of over 1,000 inmates, with an estimated budget of around 76 million euros. It is intended to replace the current penitentiary in the center of the capital, which has faced repeated criticism for its poor conditions of detention, overcrowding, and outdated infrastructure.

According to official data and reports from professional organizations, many of the cells do not meet the minimum standards for space and privacy, which has led to repeated condemnations of the Republic of Moldova at the European level.
