Ukraine boosts readiness on Transnistrian region border: “We must be prepared for any scenario”

Ukraine is reinforcing its defenses along the border with the Transnistrian region by constructing fortifications, building military roads, and implementing enhanced security measures. This initiative comes in response to the presence of Russian troops on the left bank of the Nistru and the potential risks of destabilization in the area. The announcement was made by the Operational Command "West" following a working visit by Brigadier General Volodymyr Shvedyuk to the units of the Defense Forces deployed in the direction of Transnistrian region.
The border between Ukraine and the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova has become a focus due to the presence of a Russian military contingent and an unstable security situation. While various scenarios for future developments are possible, the experience of repelling Russian armed aggression in the northern and eastern parts of the country indicates that we must be prepared for any outcome and respond effectively, as emphasized by a quoted source.
Military officials highlight that a key priority is significantly strengthening the defense capabilities of the southwestern border by establishing a tiered defense system. This system is designed to respond swiftly to any challenges or aggressive actions from the "self-proclaimed unrecognized satellite of the Russian Federation."
Additionally, efforts are underway to ensure that agricultural activities in the border region can be conducted safely. The Operational Command "West" states, "Increased control measures and permanent monitoring of areas with minefields guarantee that farmers can safely carry out spring work."
It is important to note that in early April, the 120th Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the border with the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova is "heavily mined." This measure is part of the broader strategy to enhance the security and defense of the state border in the Vinnytsia region.
According to the Ukrainian military, since March 25, 2026, engineering units and border guards from the Mohyliv-Podilskyi Border Detachment have been conducting additional mining operations to bolster defense capacity. Along the entire border with the separatist region, autonomous video surveillance and warning systems, as well as "Egoza" type barbed wire, have been installed, and additional mechanized troops with armored vehicles have been deployed in the area.
