Experts warn of hybrid threats to Moldova democracy

Disinformation campaigns in Moldova are becoming increasingly aggressive, utilizing social media to exploit public fears and undermine European integration. Experts speaking on Moldova 1’s "Eu și Uniunea Europeană" identified TikTok, Facebook, and Telegram as the primary vectors for hostile narratives regarding NATO and the war in Ukraine.

Technological escalation of propaganda

Mihai Isac, a leading disinformation expert, warned that artificial intelligence and deepfake technology have revolutionized digital warfare. These tools allow actors to tailor propaganda for specific demographics, effectively turning disinformation into a precision weapon against the state's strategic goals.

The exploitation of human psychology remains a core tactic. Iulian Groza, Executive Director of IPRE, noted that propaganda identifies visceral fears to trigger instinctive rejection of European policies. This strategy aims to distract the public and exacerbate social polarization.

Addressing the information vacuum

Experts emphasize that a lack of accessible, clear information facilitates the spread of myths. Groza argued that the most effective countermeasure is to fill the "information vacuum" with transparency and truth regarding subjects that concern the citizens.

Victor Juc, Director of the Institute of Legal, Political, and Sociological Research, highlighted the electoral impact of these campaigns. He stated that fabricated narratives frequently derail the momentum of essential reforms and the nation's European vocation.
