New high-speed rail line to link Chisinau and EU by 2030

The Republic of Moldova will begin constructing its first European-gauge railway line on the Ungheni–Chisinau route in 2027. This strategic infrastructure project aims to integrate the national network into the European Union's TEN-T corridor, enabling train speeds of up to 160 km/h.

Infrastructure Minister Vladimir Bolea confirmed that the total electrification of the Railway of Moldova (CFM) is projected for completion by 2030. The transition to electric traction is a critical economic shift intended to reduce transport costs and enhance energy efficiency across the sector.

Strategic investment and EU support

The initiative is backed by €350 million (approx. 6.75 billion MDL) investment package, currently under negotiation with the European Union. Minister Bolea emphasized that the Ungheni–Iasi section will serve as the primary electrified link, demonstrating the viability of European standards in the region.

"We are building a brand-new greenfield line from Ungheni to Chisinau International Airport," Bolea stated. This narrow-gauge, electrified track is designed to sustain a minimum speed of 160 km/h throughout the entire segment, significantly shortening travel times to European capitals.

Regional connectivity by 2030

The project aligns with Romania's ongoing modernization of the Iasi–Bucharest route. Within the next five years, these combined efforts will establish a functional high-speed corridor connecting Chisinau to the broader European rail network.

This development is a core component of the EU's €1.9 billion Growth Plan for Moldova. The feasibility studies were supported by the Eastern Partnership Connectivity Investment Facility (EPIC), involving the European Investment Bank and the EBRD.
