President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, on official visit to Chisinau on May 9

On Europe Day, May 9, President Maia Sandu will host the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, in Chisinau. He will pay an official visit to our country at the invitation of the head of state.

According to the Presidency, this marks the first bilateral visit of a Cypriot president to the Republic of Moldova. It reaffirms the partnership between the two countries and demonstrates support for Moldova's European aspirations.

The two heads of state will hold press statements at the Presidency headquarters and later participate in events dedicated to Europe Day at the Great National Assembly Square. They are expected to address citizens around 8:30 p.m.

The official welcoming ceremony and the press statements from both leaders will take place on the evening of May 9, starting after 6:00 p.m.

It is important to note that Cyprus will hold the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026. President Maia Sandu made an official visit to Cyprus in December of last year.

Additionally, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, is also currently in Chisinau. This is her second visit to the Republic of Moldova, following her previous trip in April 2025.

During her visit, Kaja Kallas engaged in discussions with President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, Minister of Defense Anatolie Nosatîi, and Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi, who is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs. She also interacted with representatives of civil society and participated in the "EuroQuiz" competition alongside young people from the Republic of Moldova.
