Chisinau hosts an international authentic folklore caravan from ten countries: “An intercultural dialogue”
Chisinau is hosting the international caravan of authentic folklore from ten countries for the first time. Organized under the auspices of the World Folklore Union, this year's edition is dedicated to the memory of Spanish artist Jose Antonio Viñas, who was a promoter of folklore in his homeland.

Members of the Spanish delegation showcased their instrument, the "gaita," which is similar to the Romanian bagpipe.
The organization of the folklore caravan in the Republic of Moldova marks a significant step in confirming the country's integration into the international cultural circuit, representing the first event of its kind.

“We are glad that this caravan has arrived in the Republic of Moldova. It serves as an intercultural dialogue, bringing together artistic delegations from nine countries to celebrate peace,” said project coordinator Silvia Zagoreanu.
“This is the only event in the world dedicated to folk music performers. The caravan takes place in a different country each year, and this is the first time we are in the Republic of Moldova. We have ten countries participating, including the host country and the organizers,” mentioned Dorel Cosma, president of the World Folklore Union.
The meetings within the caravan create more opportunities for collaboration and cultural exchange.
“We get to know new cultures and people, we see different costumes and traditions, and we enjoy sharing our experiences and traditions with each other,” said Patricia Moldovan, a performer from Romania.
“I represent the Ukrainian language, folklore, and the tradition of singing. I interpret melodies and play the traditional instrument, the Bandura,” said Iryna Stelmakh, a performer from Ukraine.
Beyond the joy of engaging with authentic musical cultures, the participants also addressed some important issues.
“Folklore is currently in a slight danger because many people are changing it. There are numerous trends affecting music and dance, even in Moldova. These are painful questions that need to be addressed,” said Marian Bunea, an emeritus artist.
On May 9, the "José Antonio Viñas" Caravan will arrive in Ungheni, where several events will take place. These will culminate in Fraternity Square with a folkloric celebration featuring performers from ten countries.
