Sport helps reduce blood pressure, marathon message in Chisinau

Exercise can help lower blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for stroke. This important message was shared by many participants in a marathon held at "Valea Morilor" Park in Chisinau. Among the runners were numerous medical professionals who aimed to raise awareness of stroke. It's essential for everyone to recognize the symptoms of a stroke and understand how to provide first aid. Timely intervention can be the key difference between recovery and severe disability or even death.

Participants gathered at the starting line and began a three-kilometer race.

“We came here with a clear message: people need to take a stand for their health and to recognize the signs of stroke prevention. I’m referring to facial asymmetry, arm weakness, dysarthria, or speech disorders,” said Vasile Rotaru, the director of the Cahul District Hospital.

“This is my first time participating in this marathon, which is dedicated to health, prevention, and the media coverage and awareness of strokes,” noted Mădălina Cebuc, a resident physician at the Institute of Neurology.

Intervention within the first 4.5 hours of stroke symptoms can save a patient's life and significantly reduce the risk of disability.

"I came here today with my family, who always supports me, because we fight against strokes every day. That's why I'm here—to raise awareness and let people know that timely action can make a difference," emphasized Nicu Rîbac, a neurosurgeon.

In 2024, a national network of treatment centers for stroke patients was established, consisting of 11 primary centers located in district hospitals across the country. Each day, 15 new cases are reported.

"Two years after the opening of the stroke centers, we are seeing an improved rate of thrombolysis, which refers to drug treatment for stroke. During this critical 4.5-hour period, public awareness has increased by over 40%," said Daniela Efremova, the head of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at the Institute of Emergency Medicine.

On average, one person in Moldova suffers a stroke every hour, making it the second leading cause of death and the primary cause of disability. The marathon with the slogan "Every minute counts. Recognize. Act. Save" is now in its third edition.

Every year, May 17 is observed as World Hypertension Day.
