Over 1,000 Romanian heroes remembered at Țiganca Cemetery

Heroes are never forgotten. A memorial service took place on Thursday, May 21, in observance of Heroes' Day at the Romanian Soldiers' Cemetery in the village of Țiganca, located in the Cantemir district. Here, 1,020 soldiers who lost their lives in these areas during World War II are laid to rest.

Every year, residents of the village of Ţiganca and the surrounding areas gather at the Heroes' Cemetery to honor the Romanian soldiers.

"It allows us to connect with our past and our history. I have documented these tragic events in my book, 'Pe ce vale la Ţiganca.'"

"This is something we will never forget, and we want to pass this memory on to our grandchildren and great-grandchildren."

Heroes' Day is celebrated each year in Romania and the Republic of Moldova with commemorative ceremonies honoring those who lost their lives on the battlefield.

The event in Țiganca took place on May 21 and was attended by the Romanian Ambassador, Cristian-Leon Țurcanu, the Romanian Defense Attaché, and a council of priests from the Metropolitanate of Bassarabia.

“At this event, we also pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in recent decades during missions carried out by the Romanian Army as part of our commitments alongside allies and partners to make the world a safer place,” declared Romanian Ambassador Cristian-Leon Țurcanu.

Between 1941 and 1943, more than a thousand Romanian soldiers who died heroically during World War II were buried in nine mass graves at the Țiganca cemetery. During the Soviet era, the cemetery was converted into a cattle farm. It was restored in 2006, and today, the names of over 800 soldiers are inscribed on commemorative plaques.
