The EU supports the Republic of Moldova in the field of ensuring internal security

The European Union (EU) supports the Republic of Moldova in ensuring internal security and managing the state border, including in the investigation of financial transactions of international criminals and the recovery of assets they illegally possess - topics discussed during a special meeting that takes place in Chisinau.

The financial aspect of organized crimes and terrorism is very important, that is why the Republic of Moldova must be helped in combating these crimes - said the Deputy Director General of the Department of Justice and Consumers of the European Commission, Nils Bernt.

"We contribute significantly to several activities in this field, we work together with our friends from the Republic of Moldova on reforms and these reforms are currently for judicial cooperation and for the effective fight against organised crime", said Nils Bernt.

The national legislation on this segment is in the process of improvement. The National Program for the recovery of criminal assets for the period 2023-2027 and the Action Plan regarding its implementation are to be adopted by the Legislature, stated the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice, Eduard Serbenco.

"It is a legislative initiative, but also the basis of this legislative initiative is the work of colleagues from the National Anticorruption Center and the Criminal Assets Recovery Agency. This is a measure provided for in the national plan for the implementation of the measures submitted by the European Commission in its opinion regarding the request for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU", said Eduard Serbenco.

The Intelligence and Security Service, in addition to the joint actions with other institutions involved in this extensive process of countering financial crimes, has an individual plan of actions, mentioned the director of the institution Alexandru Musteata.

"We have several specific activities for us. When it comes to political destabilisation, sabotage, certain activities that affect the politics of our country from the outside. Everywhere there is a common subject, money. Some activities generate illegal income and there are other activities related to money laundering, which is another crime. These illegally obtained funds are used to finance some activities in the Republic of Moldova", concluded Alexandru Musteata.

TRM.MD recalls that the Republic of Moldova became part of Europe's security belt by signing on July 11 the Agreement establishing the EU Hub for internal security and border management.
