The EU has an interest in seeing prevetting become a reality. Janis Mazeiks: Projects are ready to support the next stage

The European Union (EU) has an interest in the finalisation of the prevetting and to contribute to the reform of the judicial system by monitoring the implementation process of this law - said the Head of the EU Delegation in Chisinau, Ambassador Janis Mazeiks, at a press conference.

Some projects are now being prepared to support the next stage, the vetting stage, according to the official.

"We are monitoring the situation and we are in constant dialogue with the authorities regarding the proposed draft laws. For us it is quality rather than speed of action that matters. If something needs to last for a longer period of time, let it last in that sense, and if certain solutions are identified, they have to be appropriate and they have to be very well thought out, they have to be proportionate. That's why we are supporting the prevetting process and now we are also preparing our support for the vetting process which will take a bit longer and will be much more extensive," said Janis Mazeiks.

Ambassador Janis Mazeiks also said that the recent resignation of 20 judges from the Supreme Court of Justice is a signal of the effectiveness of the vetting process for judicial candidates and only in this way could the system be reorganised. But now it is important to avoid a deadlock in the judiciary.

The Executive has approved the draft law on the external evaluation of judges and candidates for Supreme Court judges, prepared by the Ministry of Justice.
