President Sandu honors responders after Russian attack on river infrastructure
Moldova marked Dniester River Day on Sunday, May 31, 2026, shifting the traditional celebration into an urgent call for environmental resilience following recent military disruptions. The commemoration follows a major ecological crisis in March, when Russian airstrikes on Ukraine’s energy grid severely threatened Moldova's primary water source.
President Maia Sandu used the occasion to emphasize national security vulnerabilities linked directly to natural resources.
The March 2026 crisis, caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine, showed how much solidarity and the ability to act together in difficult moments matter.
She noted that the Dniester remains vital for public health, agriculture, and energy.
On May 29, President Sandu officially honored the specialists and emergency responders who successfully contained the March contamination. Their rapid deployment of absorbing booms prevented toxic substances from advancing into the central regions of the country.
Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder also urged communities along the river banks to launch local cleanup campaigns.
The crisis on the Dniester showed us how rapidly an environmental problem can reflect directly into our homes. Environmental care must translate into daily actions rather than rhetoric.
The Dniester River Day is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of May, under a parliament decree establishing its role in regional economy and ecology. The March crisis began when a Russian strike on the Novodnestrovsk Hydropower Plant in Ukraine caused massive transformer oil leaks into the river.
