Doina Gherman: Moldova is prepared for the next step

The Republic of Moldova confirmed its readiness to begin negotiations on various chapters. This announcement was made by Moldovan parliamentarians visiting the European Parliament from June 1 to 3.

"We are currently on a fact-finding visit to the European Parliament. The delegation from the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova includes the chairs of all parliamentary committees. In the coming days, we will hold meetings with representatives from the European Commission, the European External Action Service, and the Council of the European Union to discuss ongoing reforms, the accession process, and the strengthening of democratic institutions", wrote the Vice-President of the Parliament, Doina Gherman, on her Facebook page on Monday.

The agenda includes meetings with the Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament, Nicolae Ștefănuță and Victor Negrescu, as well as with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) who are involved in the Republic of Moldova's accession to the European Union.

"The Republic of Moldova has made significant and accelerated progress in its preparations for EU accession. We have a unified political will at the institutional level and clear public support for the country's European path. It is important to seize this window of opportunity and continue moving forward", stated Doina Gherman.

This visit of Moldovan parliamentarians to Brussels follows the recent signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and the European Parliament.

According to statements from European officials, the European Commission will propose on June 16 to open the first cluster of accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.

This proposal will be presented at the General Affairs Council meeting, setting the stage for the leaders of the 27 member states to formally approve the decision at the Brussels summit, scheduled for June 18–19.

The negotiation process is structured into 33 chapters, grouped into six thematic clusters. By convention, the first cluster, which focuses on the rule of law, democratic institutions, and the functioning of the economy, is the first to open and the last to close in any accession process.
