Digital education pilot at USM integrates students from Transnistria
The Moldova State University (USM) has successfully implemented a remote learning pilot program across four major faculties. This digital initiative currently serves approximately 100 students, targeting professionals, citizens living abroad, and those with restricted mobility.

The program is active within the Departments of Law, Psychology, Economic Sciences, and Letters. By utilizing a dedicated e-learning platform, the university facilitates real-time participation in lectures and seminars, bridging the gap between traditional academia and digital flexibility.
Accessibility and social inclusion
For students like 37-year-old Lucia from Tighina, a city in the Transnistrian region, the program is a vital link to education. A mother of a five-month-old, she utilizes the platform to balance domestic responsibilities with her legal studies.
"The professors upload everything we need on the platform. We have two courses a day, and it is not very difficult to connect for these two hours," she said.
Other participants emphasize the professional freedom the system provides. "I do graphic design and work remotely. My activity is focused more on the first half of the day, and in the second half, I connect to the online courses," one student noted.
Operational transparency and flexibility
The e-learning infrastructure ensures that all academic activities, from attendance to testing, are recorded and transparent. This system allows for both synchronous (live) and asynchronous (self-paced) learning modules.
"On the platform, we have the course description, expectations, and objectives. For synchronous activities, we have a connection button, meaning online lectures are organized," explained Natalia Gavrilenco, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law.
For those facing technical or personal hurdles, the university offers personalized solutions. Students who cannot attend live sessions can establish a customized study plan with their instructors.
"If a student faces impediments that do not allow them to connect to classes via videoconference, an individual study plan can be approved. This allows the student to demonstrate their knowledge at established deadlines," stated university lecturer Doina Cuciurcă.
