Xi Jinping won his third term as China's president on Friday after an official vote by parliament, the culmination of a rise that has seen him become the country's most powerful leader in generations, Forbes reports.

The result of the deputies' vote is final: 2,952 votes in favour, zero against, zero abstentions.

With China's parliament effectively subservient to the ruling Communist Party (CCP), the outcome of the vote was beyond doubt.

The 69-year-old leader had already won a five-year extension in October as head of the CCP and the military commission, the two most important positions of power. The only candidate, he was re-elected for the same term as head of state.

The last few months, however, have been complicated for Xi Jinping, with large demonstrations in late November against his "zero Covid" policy and a major wave of deaths following the abandonment of this health strategy in December.
