EU expansion chief targets Moldova reforms before June summit

European Expansion Commissioner Marta Kos arrived in Chisinau today, June 4, for a pivotal three-day visit as Moldova prepares to open its first cluster of European Union accession negotiations.

The high-level visit aims to assess Chisinau's reform progress and catalyze foreign investment ahead of the second EU–Moldova Summit, scheduled for June 22 in Brussels.

Investment and economic resilience

President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, and Commissioner Kos will jointly open the inaugural Moldova–EU Investment Conference, co-hosted by the Moldovan Government and the European Commission. Following their bilateral talks, Sandu and Kos will hold a joint press conference at 12:00 PM.

Commissioner Kos will also attend a working lunch with Prime Minister Munteanu and cabinet members. Discussions focus on deploying the EU Economic Growth Plan for Moldova and mitigating regional economic shocks caused by Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Later in the day, Kos will meet with civil society representatives to discuss their strategic role in driving the EU integration process.

Political dialogue and digital integration

On Friday, the Commissioner will address the Moldova Digital Summit 2026, focusing on accelerating European integration through technological innovation. Her political agenda includes talks with Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, members of the parliamentary committee for European integration, and opposition leaders to ensure cross-party consensus on reform momentum.

Additionally, Commissioner Kos and President Sandu will engage with young people from EU member states and partner countries to discuss the state of European democracy. Kos will also hold a dedicated session with local mayors to review local public administration reforms.

This diplomatic mission precedes two critical milestones on Moldova's European path. The European Commission is expected to formally propose opening the first cluster of negotiating chapters for both Moldova and Ukraine around June 16, with European Council approval anticipated by mid-June.
