EU final energy consumption could be reduced by 11.7% in 2030

Negotiators of the European Council presidency and the European Parliament tentatively agreed on Friday to reduce EU final energy consumption by 11.7% in 2030, the Swedish EU presidency announced in a press release, Reuters reports, cited by Agerpres.

"Member States must collectively ensure a reduction in final energy consumption of at least 11.7% in 2030 compared to the energy consumption projections for 2030 made in 2020. This translates into an EU final energy consumption upper limit of 763 million tonnes of oil equivalent and one of 993 million tonnes of oil equivalent for primary consumption," reads the press release.

The Swedish Presidency of the European Council emphasises that for final energy consumption, the consumption limit will be binding for Member States collectively, while the target for primary energy consumption will be indicative.

The European Council and the European Parliament have reached agreement that all Member States will work towards achieving the overall EU target through national contributions and trajectories, set by Member States in their national integrated energy and climate change plans.

The Permanent Representatives Committee of the European Council as well as the Committee responsible for energy policies of the European Parliament will need to approve the provisional agreement, after which the Parliament and the Council can formally adopt it.
